Despite popular misconception, the Federal Reserve is not a government entity, It is a private bank that controls our money system. The Federal Reserve act was signed by President Woodrow Wilson on December 23 1913, who later, in 1919, expressed his regret by saying:

"I am a most unhappy man, I have unwittingly ruined my country. A great industrial nation is no controlled by it's system of credit.
We are no longer a government by free opinion, no longer a government by conviction and the vote of the majority, but a government by opinion and duress of a small group of dominant men."

The Federal Reserve has the power to create coin, print currency, and regulate the value thereof, a duty originally granted to congress by the US constitution. The Federal Reserve is also the federal governments bank, meaning that the United States Government borrows it's money and pays interest to an organization that does what the government itself is supposed to do. The US government owes $8,814,266,478,817.87 as of May 6th 2007. How much of your taxes do you think goes toward paying the interest on that debt?
